Nancy Murdock, Susan Snider, Sherry Streeter, Sally Stone, Lyn Mayewski

Networking & Contact Data Bases (Susan & Robin)

We were reminded to get any names for the Contact Data Base to Robin.

Susan mentioned that the Networking Log requires a Google account to access it. Because the Log will not be kept on the website, each person will access the shared Google document using a direct link.

Lyn will put together a Timeline of Equal Rights Maine. She will also create a Google calendar so we can keep track of upcoming events.

Network Building (Posie, Sherry, Linda, Susan)

Susan presented a script to be used for contacting potential “allies” – people or groups who believe in our mission.

Susan and Sherry will resend the script and the list of potential allies to the group. The work of calling will be divided among the steering committee.

Jean and Nancy will work on how to put the list of allies on our website.

There was discussion regarding the word allies but, at least at this time, it seems to be the best word for this.

The question came up asking if Equal Rights Maine is apolitical. After discussion, the basic answer is yes because we don’t endorse any politicians. We want anyone, regardless of party, to sign on to an ERA. The ERA is a JUDICIAL issue.

Advocacy with Legislators (Sally, Linda, Leda Beth)

Collins (Robin)

King (Sherry, Nancy)

Pingree (Nancy, Sherry)

Poliquin (Susan)

Maine: Langley & Chapman

Candidates: Governor, Legislators, etc.

Calls for Action (Leda Beth)

Robin, Susan, Linda and Posie met with Carol Woodcock. Robin emailed a report to the steering committee. Carol seems very sympathetic to the ERA. She was unable to say if Susan Collins supports an ERA at this time.

Robin and Susan have followed up with Carol and will keep in touch with her regarding a future meeting with Collins. They will also give her information about other states.

Robin will touch base with the student who also attended the meeting and is writing a paper for her class at the University of Maine.

Sherry thinks it would be best to try to meet with King after the election because his focus is tied up with that right now. Sherry has communicated with his scheduler but she hasn’t responded recently. Nancy suggested trying to schedule with a staff member in the meantime.

Nancy will be back in touch with Pingree's staff re: upcoming events in Bangor and Portland and elsewhere.

Susan will continue to send information and updates to his staff.

Maine Legislators:

Barbara Cardone has a copy of the short version of Equal Means Equal and will show it to others. She said this would work best after the election.

Sally will be going to the upcoming forums. She asked for input on a good question for her to ask the candidates. It might involve asking if the candidate would co-sponsor the bill extending the deadline for ratification of ERA (HJ53 --- SJ5) and/or a question asking if the candidate supports the legal rights of women as supported by an ERA.

Posie suggested that the question be preceded with a statement, followed by the question. This would help educate and keep the candidate from being on the spot without the background.

Linda offered to write up a draft.

Publicity (Robin, Lyn, Nancy)

Susan sent a Letter to the Editor to the Bangor Daily News. She is working with Chris Burns there.

Facebook & Website (Nancy, Sherry, Jean)

Nancy and Jean will discuss updates to the website (Allies, etc.) and asked that we take photographs at events to use on the website.

Education and Research (Susan, Nancy, Leda Beth, Sally)

Reel Pizza showing of Equal Means Equal:

The attendance was somewhat small due to good weather, but there was a good response. Jon Wilson and Charlie Stone gave us some helpful insights to things that are not clear from the movie, including the question of how would the ERA affect domestic violence, etc., directly.

Sherry has some ideas for white papers from the discussion.

Susan spoke to Rebecca White’s class at the University of Maine and showed the short version of Equal Means Equal.

Linda & Posie spoke to the Feminist Collective at the University of Maine.

Linda will touch base with the student contact, Meghan, and ask her about ways to move along and if she would be willing to have a photo of herself with a quote on our website.

Posie will be showing the short movie version to Women in Leadership group.

GSA Event:

Date tba. Sherry and Nancy will meet with Rada Starkey about the panel and showing of the short movie version. A special invitation will be sent to the larger Equal Rights Maine group (instead of the July 16 meeting previously planned).

Sally, Posie & Linda will present to the Brooksville Library on Wed., June 27, 6:00.

Bangor ERA Panel discussion:

Posie and Nancy have been in touch with the library and Mary Cathcart.. They are looking at the space under the dome for the event.. There will be a 3-person panel with a moderator.

Date is probably Sept. 23 or 24.

University of Maine School of Law:

Portland – Spring of 2019

Nancy and Robin met with Dean Danielle Conway, coming away with three interesting areas of common interest: work with the Law Review on an ERA white paper, bringing the ERA into the Rural Access to Justice conference next year, and bringing the ERA into the Justice for Women lecture series workshops, March 2019.

New Business:

Our finances and non-profit status were deferred to the next meeting.

Lyn offered to keep track of personal expenditures so that we can all share in the costs.
